Waiting to Leave for China by Natalie Smythe

Hi there! In about 3 weeks I’m going to be getting on a plane and flying off to spend a year volunteering in China. This seems like a very daunting prospect, but at the same time I’m so excited! I just think it’s amazing that this kind of opportunity is available to young people like me, if you told me a few years ago I would soon be teaching in rural China for a year I would not have believed you. I have made myself […]

Sarah King: Initial report

Hi, my name is Sarah, and I’m choosing to spend my gap year in Brazil, with a charity called BMS, Baptist Missionary Society. What initially attracted me to BMS was the fact that they seemed to offer a well supported, well planned, and well balanced year out for a person looking to take a year out. This accompanied with our agreements in faith matters, was what made me decided to pursue the idea. When I applied to become an “action teamer” as we are called […]

In a couple of week’s time I will be jetting off to Chile to teach English in the capital city of Santiago for 12 months. I will be teaching in the poorer suburbs of the city and living with a Chilean family who only speak Spanish. My project partner and I will be teaching 4-17 year olds in a school with around 550 pupils. I start off my year as a language assistant and as I become more confident and my teaching skills improve I […]

Ysabelle Thackery: Initial report

I’m Ysabelle Thackray, a 17 year old from Dunbar (Scotland) who decided it would be far too boring and make my mother far too content just to go straight to University. Instead I have decided to defer my place at Glasgow University for Medicine and will be jet setting off to South Africa for a year! My decision to take a gap year was made final when we received a talk from Project Trust at school. Project Trust is an educational charity based in on […]

Laura Brown: Initial report

‘Off to Uganda in a couple of weeks…’ I’m off to Uganda in a couple of weeks to start my year working as an Education Consultant for a charity called Promoting Equality in African Schools (PEAS). I’m really excited but, as predicted, running around trying to sort last minute details. I’m currently working as a Humanities teacher in a Secondary School in Nottingham. What with Sports Day, G.C.S.E exams, end of term celebrations, it’s amazing to think that in just a few weeks I will […]

Pre-Monsoon Travels by Kyle and Sarah

After a 4 week break to the paradises that are Goa and Kerala we returned to the magnificent foothills of the Himalayas. From the sands, seas and scorching sun we are back to the very green, wet and cold surroundings of the school but we couldn’t be happier to see the children and get back to the hard work. Goa was wonderful which was to be expected, fantastic weather and plenty of hustle and bustle on the beach of Palolem for our first 2 days. […]
