Message From Thailand!
Im finally away and in Thailand! Ive been at my school in Mae Sai for over a week now, so I guess its time for an update.
On flying into Bangkok the heat that hit us was almost overwhelming, but what struck me more was how dark it was at only 6 oclock: no long evenings for us over here I suppose.
After two days in the capital, my project partner, Katie, and I were bussed up North to what is now our home for the next year. As this is as North as you can get the journey was thought to be short at 11 hours long!
Once in Mae Sai we were taken to our shack (in no way can it be called a house). We had to start cleaning straight away as it was in such as state from only a month of neglect: dust and dirt everywhere; a broken light; the fridge growing us new food; and a shower that still floods the adjoining room every time you use it!
Ew!
Were slowly getting sorted, but it looks like cleaning will be our main weekend activity for a few weeks yet.
The next day was Monday, our first day of school, and everyone made us feel incredibly welcome. So far we can only help in lessons if we are invited, as were not timetabled in until next term, but what weve seen so far is great. Not that weve been too much, given that on Wednesday school shut to give the teachers (including us!) a trip South, for 4 days.
Apparently in Thai schools they set aside a certain amount of budget for this sort of thing- a brilliant idea in my opinion, we had a fantastic time seeing the sites and going to the beach, as long as they werent trying to make us do karaoke!!!
I miss home a little, especially the cool weather and savory food (which they just dont do over here), but being here is amazing and everyone is friendly, with no exceptions.
Just starting another day at school, who knows what will happen!? But nothing can be bad as it truly is the land of smiles.
