Kianda Transition Class Report

The Building Work
When our centre in Kianda village of Kibera slum (Nairobi, Kenya) closed for Christmas holidays, building work for our new Transition classroom and microfinance office began. We had bought the land a couple of months prior to the building work starting and were waiting for the compound to be clear of chil-dren before we began the work. In the space of a week the structure was up, built and almost finished.

Although the building is basic, it does the job and will provide the perfect learning space for our Transition class and office space for our microfinance programme to be run out of. We are excited for a brand new Transition class to start in February.

About Transition Class
Transition Class is part of our School Transition Pro-gramme which rehabili-tates street-children through a holistic pro-gramme providing special-ist educational classes, ac-cess to healthcare, regular meals, counselling and family integration work. Once chil-dren have been attending Transition Class for around a year we work to ensure the successful transition of chil-dren from the Turning Point Project into local partner pri-mary schools by enrolling them, providing them with a school uniform and bag and covering the costs of school admission and lunches. We maintain regular contact with the children to ensure the success and sustainability of the programme.

Our first Transition class started at our project in Mashi-moni village of Kibera slum in 2004. The Transition class being run from Kianda will replicate this successful work-ing model and we are excited to see many more children leave the streets and return to mainstream education.

Meet Catherine. Shes 13 years old and has been coming for breakfast at our Kianda centre for the past four months after being told about Turning Point by some friends. She lives with her mother and siblings in small single-roomed hut in Kibera. Catherine completed class four in December 2011 but the school she was attending was only from class 1 4 (primary school goes up to class 8).

When she completed class 4 last year, Catherines mother was unable to pay the admission fees and buy the school uniform to enrol her into a local government primary school. Consequently Catherine has now missed a year of school. In February next year, Catherine will be one of our first kids to start the new Transition class in Kianda where she will attend lessons for a year, catching up on the education shes missed in the past year. We will then support her to rejoin a local government primary school at the end of the year and see her through her continuing education.
