In May 2023, we agreed to provide a grant of £15,000 to the Uphill Trust. The funding will go towards a staff accommodation and a sanitation block at Uphill Junior School, Western Uganda.
Staff accommodation is a must for rural schools
The Uphill Trust established Uphill Junior School 10 years ago, and has grown the roll to 300 children today. Uphill Junior School’s dedicated teachers mostly live in the city, and have to take lodgings near the school with local families. The Uphill Trust would like to build a staff accommodation block on site so that teachers would have better facilities, which will materially improve retainment rates for teachers.
The proposal is to build 10 housing units for staff which will include one to be used as a communal kitchen – each unit costs around £2,000 to build. In addition, c.£7,000 is required for a sanitation block (latrines, showers, laundry). The Trustees of Hazel’s Footprints Trust agreed to a grant of £15,000; paying for the sanitation block and also 3 or 4 accommodation units for staff.
Breaking ground
We are so pleased to see the first photos of the new staff accommodation units taking shape. As it’s rainy season just now, there are some days when work has to slow or stop – sometimes it’s just too muddy! The walls of the accommodation block and kitchen are shown below. The new latrine block will be started after these buildings are more complete.
