Vicki White: Initial Report

Vicki White

Not long now!!!

Hi there! My name is Vicki White, I am 23 years old and live in Newcastle upon Tyne. In February I will be volunteering in Kenya for 6 months and I can’t wait! The organisation I will be volunteering with is Team Kenya (http://www.teamkenya.org.uk/), a charity based in Newcastle. I will be staying at Karibuni Eco Cottages in Ndhiwa, Western Kenya (http://www.karibunicottages.com)/.

Team Kenya is a charity that is particularly close to my heart as I have been fundraising for them since I was in sixth form and have continued to do so. When I was in year 13 I got the chance to go to Kenya for 2 weeks and see first hand the amazing work they do and ever since I’ve been hooked! Team Kenya is run entirely by volunteers here in the UK and since leaving University I’ve been helping out as much as I possibly can, helping to organise fundraising events and giving talks in my old school and other local schools/colleges.

I am incredibly excited about spending 6 months in Ndhiwa and can’t wait to get stuck in and help with the many projects Team Kenya support. This will include teaching English, helping with the homework club and girls support group and also monitoring the progress of the sponsored students. I will even attempt to get involved with the girls football, not that my football skills are great! I’m sure they will have a good laugh anyway!

I can’t wait to immerse myself in a completely different culture and be part of the community. I am really looking forward to meeting lots of new people and forming friendships as well as catching up with a few familiar faces.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Hazels Footprint Trust and all my friends and family for being so supportive and helping me to reach my fundraising goal.

Now all that’s left is attempting to pack for 6 months!

Next time you hear from me I will be in Ndhiwa!
